5th & 6th Grade: Verb to be, PAST





 First of all, this is the way the verb "To be" is conjugated in the past tense.


I  WAS

YOU  WERE

HE / SHE / IT  WAS

WE  WERE

YOU  WERE

THEY  WERE


Look at the next affirmative sentences as examples:

"He was ill yesterday"
"You were ill yesterday"



Now, pay attention how to form negative and interrogative sentences.



NEGATIVE SENTENCES

SUBJECT + WASN´T  /  WEREN´T + COMPLEMENTS

Example: He wasn´t ill yesterday.

You weren´t ill yesterday.



INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES

WAS  /  WERE + SUBJECT + COMPLEMENTS ?
Example: Was he ill yesterday?
Were you ill yesterday?



SHORT ANSWERS

Yes, SUBJECT + was / were
No, SUBJECT + wasn´t / weren´t
Answers:
Yes, He was.
No, He wasn´t.
Yes, You were.
No, you weren´t
